Fabulous Fractions

This week we have been learning about fractions. Food is a fantastic way to explore fractions. We first used fairy bread to explore halves, quarters and eigths.

 Then on Friday we cut pizzas as part of our Syndicate time. We found out that each piece or fraction of a whole pizza or piece of bread had to be the same size or else it would not be fair.

Water, Water, Water!

Last week we had a very busy week as our unit on water came to an end.
We had a visit from the local firetruck and firemen. This was very good and the children learnt the important message of 'Get down, get low get out, fast!"  We also were given a display of how powerful the hoses were and ended up getting a wee bit damp from the spray.

On Thursday and Friday we spent a lot of time doing experiments and writing about bubbles. We learnt all about the different types of clouds- Cirrus, Cumulus and Stratus. We spent some time looking up at the sky and using our special cloud viewers to identify the different types. We also made bubble blowers or used my bubble blowers to experiment with bubble mixture. Everyone had such a great time and were amazed at how high some bubbles floated. Afterwards we did some great writing about bubbles. Check these stories/poems out in the classroom. we even made special bubble print backgrounds to display our work.

Lastly we did some mixing of substances with water. we had to look very closely for changes to our water mixtures. We also discovered that water doesn't mix with oil and the oil lies on top of the water in a distinct layer.

A Farewell to two special Room 7 members.

On Friday we said farewell to Ryan who is moving down to the deep South. We had a special party and movie to say goodbye. Alekai was unable to be there as he had left in the holidays to go to a school closer to his home. They are both very special members of our class and we will miss them.

Two children from Room 7 won special awards at our end of term final assembly last term.

Buddy award for helping others in the class and younger children in the syndicate.

Arts Award for outstanding attention to detail and quality in the visual arts.

Sharing Our Writing
Last term  the children of Room 7 shared their writing with the children of Room 9. They were so excited to show the publishing books they had worked on. each story had been published from their writing books and then carefully illustrated by the children.
